The Reading Club has just finished reading Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli and are now reading The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo. Both novels have to do with conformity (going along with the crowd) and non-conformity (doing your own thing.) Stargirl is a nonconformist who stands out in her high school by wearing strange clothes, playing her ukelele in the school cafeteria, and not caring what others think of her. Like Stargirl, Despereaux is a misfit in the mice community. He falls in love with a human and loves to read books. In the middle school/high schoool setting, how difficult is it to “be yourself?” Does being different come with a price in terms of social acceptance? HHmmm…
